If you believe that you have paid too much National Insurance (NI), ie, submitting multiple timesheets in one week you will need to follow the guidance below. Please note that King's Teachers will not facilitate automatic NI refunds.

Either go to https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/national-insurance-forms#apply-for-a-refund-of-national-insurance-contributions or write to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) after the end of the tax year you’re claiming for. A tax year runs from 6 April to the following 5 April.

You’ll need to tell them:

  • your National Insurance number
  • why you overpaid
  • which tax year or years you overpaid in
  • how much tax and National Insurance you paid in the tax year or years you’re claiming for - include your P60 or a statement from your employer
  • why you cannot get the refund from your employer (Does not facilitate automatic NI refunds)
  • the bank account name, sort code and account number for any refund to be paid into
